Live action superheroes dominating a theatre near you

By - Jul 21st, 2011 04:00 am

Teacher and comic book connoisseur John Steib.

Over the last five years, comic book devotees the world over have seen their favorite heroes and villains come to life on the big screen. From Spider Man to the Dark Knight, film adaptations of legendary comic series have dominated movie theaters, and this summer blockbuster season is no exception.

Lifelong fanboy and comic book enthusiast John Steib cut his teeth on The Avengers and Superman, and has fostered a deep-seated love for comics ever since. When he’s not working full-time as a third grade teacher, he spends his Sundays manning the counter at Collector’s Edge Comics in West Allis, a post he’s held for 20 years.

For Steib, seeing his childhood heroes make the jump from splash page to silver screen is definitely exciting , but for him, nothing matches the thrill of reading a serial in sequence.

“No matter how good a movie is, it’s never going to be better than the source material,” says Steib. “There’s so much more they can do on the printed page, with the imagination of the writer and the imagination of the artist, with no limitations at all.”

(But that doesn’t mean he won’t be in line to catch the premiere of Captain America this weekend…)

Today, we explore the superhero phenomenon and John chats about the beloved comic book characters of his childhood and beyond.
