TCD Traveler: Golf Getaways & Timing your Mountain Time
|

Ah, what a lovely day. Don't you just want to pound the hell out of this little white dimpled ball? Photos by Robert Bundy.
Fore!
“I have one rule for this trip: no culture.”
I recently took a weekend trip with a buddy of mine. This friend knows me fairly well, and so he knew in advance to set ground rules with me that would ensure his good time. He also knew that when escaping the frigid, snowbound limbo that is Milwaukee in January, the whole idea is to be outside as much as possible. No puttering around some local museum, no wasted hours in a windowless, dark theater taking in a matinee. Nothing, in short, that interferes with your reunion with the glorious sun.
And sometimes, all you really want to do is play golf. At many resorts, golf courses are just one of many, many amenities on offer in the spirit of having a little something for everyone. At The Villas of Grand Cypress in Orlando, it’s all about the golf. Here you’ll find 45 holes of Jack Nicklaus Signature-designed golf, a golf academy where you can work on your swing, two restaurants, two pools and blah, blah, blah– it’s all about the golf, remember?
If you’re itching to shake the dust off your clubs, and want to concentrate on The Royal and Ancient Game with no distractions, consider a weekend getaway here. Packages start at a mere $189 per person per night.

The Best Time for Mountain Time?
“Great article on Park City, but can you offer any advice about the best time to visit? We love to ski, but don’t want to fight crowds on the slopes.” –Angela B.
As I noted in the story, Deer Valley Mountain Resort limits their ticket sales to ensure against overcrowding on the slopes. Furthermore, the excellent Canyons Resort has recently expanded and offers over 180 runs, and Park City Mountain Resort has added trails for this year, as well. So unless you never learned how to share in kindergarten, honestly, you should be fine.
If you really want to have the runs to yourselves, however, consider going when Park City hosts their famed Sundance Film Festival. While that sounds completely counterintuitive—the town hosts a ton of visitors that week and the hotels fill up fast– the locals tell me that as all of the out-of-town butts are parked in the theaters that week, those beautifully groomed ski trails are practically empty. Sundance is held in January, so something to think about for next year. But don’t wait—the perfect time to go is right now.
