In week two of Backstage’s series on poets, Mark ventures into the mysterious and lively world of slam, exploring such concepts as poetry as performance and freeing oneself from the traditional narrative forms of the medium.
Mark talks with spoken word artists and slam performers Dasha Kelly and Dan Vaughn, both of whom were featured on Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam. Kelly is also the founder and director of Still Waters Collective, and outreach program that works primarily with youth to provide creative writing skills and outlets as a means to build leadership skills and empowerment.
Dasha and Dan share their thoughts on the craft, what makes a good performance piece and how they found their respective creative salvation through spoken word. And as a special bonus, they both perform riveting original pieces in the studio.
